The collection consists of 5 folders, containing some 778 items of general correspondence mostly to Bartlett during his years as Adjutant General of New Mexico Territory (1882-1885), as a private attorney (1896), and as Solicitor General of the Territory (1903). A large amount of the letters are hand written. Most of the letters in the first 3 folders deal with situations arising during his time as Adjutant General. Matters such as military assignments, armaments, prisoner escorts, territorial laws, local militia and stationing of calvary due to criminal acts and Indian unrest are discussed in the correspondence. The 4th folder (1896) contains correspondence, mostly sent to Bartlett in his capacity as an attorney, head of the Republican Central Committee and regarding other business dealings. Matters discussed include small claims, land grants, lawsuits, railroad and timber cases and some personal correspondence. The 5th folder (1903) is mostly general correspondence about legal cases, politics and business dealings during his position as Solicitor General of the Territory. Correspondence is from a large variety of sources, most notably, T.B. Catron, H.O Bursum, Elfego Baca, Kit Carson, A.B. Fall, J.J. Hagerman, Espiridon Armijo, G. Armijo and many others.
